If the authorities declare a total fire ban day, make sure you heed their warnings. People who live in, or will be travelling in bushfire prone areas need to ensure that they take various safety steps as well. Here are some of the most important safety steps to follow:

  • Monitor the local radio service at all times
  • Keep your mobile phone with you and switched on
  • Consider leaving the area for the day as a safety precaution
  • Keep an eye on changing weather conditions
  • Keep in touch with your neigbours
  • Have you gear packed ready for evacuation now!
  • Ensure everyone staying with you knows the plan if a bushfire approaches
  • Wear hardy, safe clothing and foot wear
  • Drink lots of water to keep well hydrated
  • Do not drive into smoke or areas that are alight unless it is your last resort

If your plan is to stay and defend, only do so if you have time to enact your full preparation plan otherwise leave early.
